7 IT Resolutions for 2017

Happy new year from your KINETIC family! We are looking forward to helping you make 2017 the best year yet.

In this spirit, our experts weighed in on 7 resolutions that will help you keep your data safe and leverage IT to set your organization ahead instead of bogging you down.

1) I will consider using a separate email and browser for online shopping and newsletter sign-ups.

While online shopping is convenient, we lose security each time we enter our email address to receive newsletters, place online orders, etc. For this reason, consider using at least 2 emails in 2017: one (or two) for business and/or personal communication, and one for online shopping/newsletter sign-ups.

2) I will change my passwords at least every 90 days.

We’ve all been there at one time or another – we set a password for some account and leave it for eternity. But hackers are getting smarter and smarter, and static passwords only help them access our data and personal information. In 2017, commit to changing your password every 90 days to keep those accounts safe!

3) I will NOT keep my password written down on my desk or on a sticky note attached to my monitor.

While you (hopefully) trust your co-workers, there are any number of other people who walk past your desk after you leave it for the day or even during work hours if you step out for a meeting or appointment. In 2017, promise yourself that you’ll trash those sticky notes and instead use a password manager.

4) I will save my data to a network drive that is being backed up.

Data is the most valuable piece of any server or computer, and there are a number of ways that it can be lost. Save yourself time, money, and headache by making 2017 the “Year of the Backup” using KINETIC’s top tips for effective backup.

5) I will make my password complex. Not “12345.”

Worried about forgetting your passwords with an increase in complexity? There are a number of tools that will help you keep everything straight so you’re never locked out of your account.

6) I will make sure my virus protection is running and updated daily.

As viruses and malware become increasingly common, it is critical for your organization to have a prevention/security strategy in place. There are a number of programs that we recommend to clients for their reliability. Make sure you take a moment to pick the appropriate software for your enterprise, here’s how!

7) I will organize and delete unnecessary files.

Have you ever heard of the saying, “clear your house to clear your mind?” Same goes with your computing devices! Your computer will function better, and you will be able to function more productively and effectively if you organize and delete any unnecessary files. There are a number of cleanup tools that will help you do this so you don’t have to do it manually.
